What is Glutathione?
vivaMD Medical Spa & Weight Management offers Glutathione injection. Glutathione is a very simple molecule that is produced naturally in your body. It is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein or amino acids — cysteine, glycine and glutamine.
Glutathione is the most critical and integral part of your detoxification system. All the toxins stick onto glutathione, which then carries them into the bile and the stool — and out of your body. The secret of its power is the sulfur (SH) chemical groups it contains. Sulfur is a sticky, smelly molecule. It acts like fly paper and all the bad things in the body stick onto it, including free radicals and toxins like mercury, Led and other heavy metals.
Normally glutathione is recycled in the body — except when the toxic load becomes too great. And that explains why we are in such trouble …. There are genes involved in producing enzymes that allow the body to create and recycle glutathione in the body. These genes have many names, such as GSTM1, GSTP1 and more.
These genes impaired in some people for a variety of important reasons. We humans evolved in a time before the 80,000 toxic industrial chemicals found in our environment today were introduced into our world, before electromagnetic radiation was everywhere and before we polluted our skies, lakes, rivers, oceans and teeth with mercury and lead.
That is why most people survived with the basic version of the genetic detoxification software encoded in our DNA, which is mediocre at ridding the body of toxins. At the time humans evolved we just didn’t need more. Who knew we would be poisoning ourselves and eating a processed, nutrient-depleted diet thousands of years later?
Because most of us didn’t require additional detoxification software, almost of half of the population now has a limited capacity to get rid of toxins. These people are missing GSTM1 function — one of the most important genes needed in the process of creating and recycling glutathione in the body. The one-third of our population that suffers from chronic disease is missing this essential gene.
Glutathione seems to be a darling of the alternative medicine industry. Dr. Mark Hyman calls it ” the mother of all antioxidants.” Importantly while glutathione is also found in food , dietary consumption doesn’t appear to relate to blood levels, suggesting that oral supplementation is not as effective as intramuscular injection of glutathione. And given our bodies synthesize glutathione, the relationship between supplementation, blood levels and disease in not established.
The Importance of Glutathione in Protecting Against Chronic Illness
Glutathione is critical for one simple reason: It recycles antioxidants. Dealing with free radicals is like handing off a hot potato. They get passed around from vitamin C to vitamin E to lipoic acid and then finally to glutathione which get rid of the free radicals and recycles other antioxidants. After this happens, the body can “reduce” or regenerate another protective glutathione molecule.
However, problems occur when we are overwhelmed with too much oxidative stress or too many toxins. Then the glutathione becomes depleted and we can no longer protect ourselves against free radicals, infections, cancer or other diseases. This leads to further sickness and soon we are in the downward spiral of chronic illness.
But that’s not all. Glutathione is also critical in helping your immune system do its job of fighting infections and preventing cancer and other diseases. That’s why studies show that it can help in the treatment of AIDS and cancer.
Glutathione also helps us reach peak mental and physical function. Research has shown that raised glutathione levels decrease muscle damage, reduce recovery time, increase strength and endurance and shift metabolism from fat production to muscle development.
Glutathione is also helps to lighten/brighten your skin by disrupting melanin (pigment) formation and converting eumelanin (brown melanin) to pheomelanin (yellow melanin). at vivaMD Medical Spa & Weight Management, medical professionals inject glutathion with vitamin C , other essential vitamin and amino acids which works with glutathione to help your body produce more red blood cell glutathione – and, in turn, the glutathione prolongs the beneficial effects of the vitamins and amino acids.
Why glutathione should not administered intravenously?
The alarming increase in the unapproved use of glutathione administered intravenously (inside the vein) as a skin-whitening agent at very high doses is unsafe and may result in serious consequences to the health of users. There is inadequate safety documentation on the use of high doses of glutathione administered at 600 mg to 1.2 grams once weekly and even up to twice weekly. Adverse drug reactions resulting from the use of glutathione IV for skin whitening have been reported and include the following:
- Reports of adverse drug reactions ranging from skin rashes to the serious and potentially fatal Steven Johnsons Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis
- Derangements in the thyroid function
- Suspected kidney dysfunction potential resulting in kidney failure
- Severe abdominal pain in a patient receiving glutathione administered intravenously had been reported.
- Introduction of harmful microorganisms that can result in serious infections including potential fatal sepsis
- Injection of air can lead to embolus which is also potentially fatal
- Unsafe use of needles (recycling, sharing) can result in the transmission of hepatitis B and even HIV
- Counterfeiting of glutathione has been reported and may lead to use of non-sterile preparations which could lead to serious infections.
At vivaMD Medical Spa & Weight Management, your safety is always our highest priority. That’s why we will never administer glutathione intravenously and we work only with FDA-regulated pharmacies to source our ingredients. We highly recommend for anyone seeking glutathione treatment to not get an IV administration of it.
Are there negative long-term effects?
There are no known side effects, long term effects or interactions with intramuscular administration of glutathione in small doses.
How many treatments are needed for optimal results?
The number of Glutathione sessions you need will depend on your goals. One round of treatment involves 8 sessions performed once a week for 8 weeks.
How long do results last?
The results of your glutathione injections will last for a few months. Maintenance is required to maintain your longer goal term. The frequency of maintenance treatments will depend on your ability to avoid factors that increase oxidative stress and impede your results, including smoking, alcohol, a poor diet, poor sleep, stress, and environmental toxins.
